Project: Drainage Improvement and Bunker Enhancement Project
Client: The Glendale Golf & Country Club
Location: Edmonton, Alberta
The Glendale Golf and Country Club is an eighteen-hole championship golf course that features sweeping elevation changes, strategically placed hazards, alternative approach angles, subtly contoured greens, and seamless integration with the surrounding environment. As one of the finest private golf facilities in Alberta, the Club is continually striving to provide a first-class experience for their members and guests. When drainage concerns and bunker deterioration became evident in 2020, the Club commissioned Ohnysty Crough Golf Design to assess the conditions and provide recommendations for potential improvement.
OC Golf Design provided a comprehensive improvement plan which generally included: the installation of a 2500 gallon underground holding tank and network of 2” perforated drain lines to direct storm water water out of fairway; implementation of an automatic pump and discharge system to prevent the underground tank from overflowing; the installation of a 12” storm water/pond overflow culvert allowing the Club to control the water level of the adjacent pond; and the redevelopment of specific bunker complexes, including new drainage, bunker sand and shaping adjustments. Our innovative approach also included the installation of Better Billy Bunker liner to specific bunkers to ensure the steep face and sharp-nosed bunkers the course is known for would be preserved. In the end, OC Golf Design provided a long-term sustainable drainage solution while improving playability and aesthetics at the same time.
