Bio:
Paul’s introduction to golf course architecture began out of curiosity at a young age. Saturday’s during the summer were always the same, wake up at the crack of dawn to be ready to walk alongside his dad during his regular morning round. When not tending the pin, he would be drawn to how the layout, hazards or landforms would affect each shot while also imagining ways he could alter the holes design.
His curiosity quickly developed into a passion and following high school jobs in golf course operation and maintenance Paul decided to turn his passion into a career by enrolling in the Landscape Architectural Technology program at NAIT followed by the Landscape Architecture Degree program at the University of Idaho. It was through these studies that he was introduced to many of the classical courses designed by “Golden Age” architects such as James Braid, Stanley Thomson, Charles Blair Macdonald, Alister Mackenzie, George C Thomas, Donald Ross and A.W Tillinghast (among many others) which serve as his design inspiration to this day.
Following schooling, his attention turned to golf course construction where several years in the field taught Paul the value of quality construction while introducing him to the creative art of golf course shaping. Years later he would accept a position as a Golf Course Architect with Golfplan Associates in Calgary where he spent ten years developing invaluable skills such as tendering, construction drawings, permitting, specifications, etc. Fast forward to Spring 2018 where, sitting in the clubhouse at Carnoustie, Paul and Bryan decided to combine their years of experience to form Ohnysty Crough Golf Design.
As lifelong student of the game, Paul remains committed to the refinement of his craft through the study of an extensive collection of golf architecture books, and by gaining design inspiration by visiting different golf courses throughout the world.
